Received this link http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/09/the_short_but_eventful_life_of.html Great photos. Worth a gander. When Hanna was fast approaching our home here in Savannah I was wondering what it would take to make me evacuate and at the time it would have been a Category 3+ storm. We aren’t really near the water so we wouldn’t have the surge to worry about as far inland as we are but, now it makes me wonder if staying at all would be wise. Especially with the power situation. Makes you realize how much you take for granted.

During Rita Jefferson County was one of the last to be evacuated. My husband was scheduled to work at Motiva in Port Arthur and had to stay to shut the plant down. We were only allowed to evacuate north and due to the gas shortage only made it to San Augustine Tx. We ended up spending the night in the storm in a car wash. Right in the path of the storm we experienced at least 110 mile an hour winds for hours. When Ike was approaching us we felt safe to stay in our home in Winnie which is about 15 miles from High Island beach. The winds were as strong as Rita’s and we had much tornadic activity. No structural damage to our home, but we were here for all the sounds of trees cracking all around us and could feel the 4 corners of our frame home on a slab jerk at times as the winds changed directions. I walked the rooms all over our home through the night and prayed asking God for mercy and protection. My husband sat on the counch nodding his head in agreement with me. After seeing the aftermath as soon as the dawn appeared and later digging out limbs in our yard that had been driven into the ground like daggers we have decided that we will forever trust our educated Meterologists that now have the state of the art technology to inform us of details that we could not have had 20 years ago.I know many of the residents of Chrystal Beach and Port Boliver probably felt like we did, “It’s just a category 2,... it won’t be that bad.” My heart goes out to the families of those that lost loved ones. I am so sorry for your losses.
